The Trademark of Origin

Vetro Artistico® Murano

1. WHAT IS THE “VETRO ARTISTICO® MURANO” TRADEMARK?

It is a mark of origin that certifies glass products made on the island of Murano in Venice. The Trademark was established by an Italian law (Regione Veneto lex. n. 70 del 23/12/’94) and it is the only official guarantee of a glass product certainly made on the island of Murano. The trademark assures the customer and defends one of the most famous symbols of Made in Italy born from a thousand-year-old tradition.

2. HOW DO I RECOGNIZE A TRUE MURANO GLASS PRODUCT?

Good question! By the quality of its materials, the beauty of its shape and its impeccable craftsmanship, first and foremost! But if you really want to be officially sure to avoid purchasing a valueless imitation, the true Murano glass creation must carry the tamper-proof seal. The seal displays the “Vetro Artistico® Murano” Trademark with the producer’s number.

3. WHO HAS CREATED THE TRADEMARK “VETRO ARTISTICO® MURANO”?

The Trademark was established by an Italian law (Regione Veneto lex. n. 70 del 23/12/’94) and it is the only official guarantee of a glass product certainly made on the island of Murano. The trademark assures the customer and defends one of the most famous symbols of Made in Italy born from a thousand-year-old tradition.

4. WHAT DOES THE TRADEMARK GUARANTEE?

With this trademark, the Veneto Region guarantees to the consumer the certainty of purchasing a product made on the island of Murano in Venice, according to the traditional techniques of the master glassmakers.

5. WHO CAN USE THE TRADEMARK?

Only the companies that comply with the parameters defined by law and are concessionaires of the “Vetro Artistico® Murano” Trademark may use and apply the label to any glass part of the object, thus certifying its origin unequivocally.

6. WHO MANAGES AND IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE TRADEMARK?

The “Vetro Artistico® Murano” trademark, by appointment of the Regione Veneto, is managed by Promovetro, the Consortium that assembles glass producers on the island of Murano in Venice. Promovetro evaluates all companies’ applications and their compliance with the parameters of the law, assigns the Trademark, and monitors its correct usage and promotion.

7. WHAT DOES THE TRADEMARK DEPICT?

The trademark depicts a typical glasswork tool, the “borsella”, as it is used to create a glass dish. The Trademark may be red or blue, according to the type of product manufacturing. The “borsella” and the writing “Vetro Artistico® Murano” are printed in gold leaf. The label is tamper-proof — which means it is impossible to remove without tearing — and displays the producer’s identification code.

8. WHY BUY ONLY AUTHENTIC MURANO GLASS?

Because only true Murano glass retains and increases its value through the years. Because each creation is unique, handcrafted for you by a master glassmaker according to the ancient secret traditions of Murano in Venice.

9. WHY NOT BUY AN IMITATION THAT STATES “PRODUCED ACCORDING TO THE METHOD OF MURANO“?

Because imitations have no artistic nor economic value, and are therefore not a wise investment. Because imitations are not produced on the island of Murano in Venice. Because imitations do not guarantee compliance with labour laws, product quality measures and consumer health regulations. Because only true Murano glassmaking masters have the same furnaces as the ancient artisans, only they know the true secrets of mixtures, temperatures and materials to create glass from the island of Murano, and only they possess the knowledge base to really apply the “method of Murano art glass”.
